Historic Yorkshire

Overview

It’s little wonder generations of painters have found their muse among Yorkshire’s landscapes. The countryside is devastatingly beautiful, particularly on the wild moors.

And its towns and cities combine quaint English charm with reminders of a heritage dating back to Roman times. From our base in bustling York, we’ll plunge into the thick of it all.

We’ll visit the spa town of Harrogate, explore grand Castle Howard and journey through the moors on a wood-panelled heritage train.

Itinerary

Day 1 York

VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home, for your journey to the DoubleTree by Hilton York (4T). We aim for you to arrive at the hotel between 4pm and 5pm, with time to settle in before we enjoy dinner this evening.

Day 2 RHS Harlow Carr - Harrogate

After breakfast we start our day with a visit to the exquisite RHS Garden Harlow Carr, home to beautiful woodland, magnificent landscapes and enchanting wildflower meadows. The innovative kitchen garden is particularly popular, with opportunities to gain advice on growing vegetables, fruit and herbs.

We continue to Harrogate where you’re free to explore at leisure.

Perhaps visit the Turkish Baths and Spa, or wander through Harrogate and The Montpellier Quarter, considered the antiques and art centre of the north.

Day 3 North Yorkshire Moors Railway - Castle Howard

Relax in wood panelled carriages on a renowned heritage railway as we travel through enchanting landscapes on the 180-year old North Yorkshire Moors Railway, pulled by a magnificently restored steam engine or locomotive. Our journey takes us 24 miles across the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors from 1930s themed Pickering Station to Whitby, for a coach tour of the traditional seaside resort associated with Captain James Cook and Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

From here, we depart for Castle Howard, which is reputed to be Yorkshire’s finest historic house and estate, and certainly one of the greatest in England. It took over 100 years to complete this magnificent 18th century mansion, set within 1,000 acres of beautiful landscape. Exhibitions display the varied history of the family who lived here for over 300 years, and the uses of Castle Howard.

Day 4 York

Today you are free to make your own discoveries of this stylish city. York has something for everyone from its range of shops and restaurants to its historic buildings and numerous museums. You may like to visit the world-renowned National Railway Museum, discover the city as it was over 1,000 years ago in the Jorvik Viking Centre, or amble between the crooked 14th century timber-framed buildings on The Shambles and walk the medieval city walls.

Day 5 York

This morning we bid farewell to Yorkshire. You will be collected at 10am by your VIP vehicle, for the journey home.
