Walking the Austrian Tyrol

Overview

Stretching along the valley at the northern end of Tyrol’s largest lake, the quiet village of Achenkirch is the perfect base for a week of walking. Surrounded by the lush meadows and jagged peaks of the Rofan and Karwendel mountain ranges, the walking trails throughout the area are plentiful. With such a great variety of walks, two grades are offered each day (moderate and challenging) with one leader escorting each grade.

Itinerary

Day 1 Fly to Munich, transfer to Achenkirch

Fly to Munich airport; transfer to Achenkirch. In the evening the leaders will hold a welcome meeting to discuss the week ahead and give advice on the local area.

Day 2 Level 3 Ascend to the Falkenmoosalm

We take a short bus journey to the end of the village of Achenkirch and then follow a forest track climbing gently with wonderful views back to the Guffertspitze, before arriving at Falkenmoosalm for a picnic lunch. We contour below Hochplatte, before descending through the forest and all the way back along the valley to the hotel.

Level 5 Summit Hochplatte {1813m}

We walk directly from the hotel up a climbing valley to the Seewaldhütte (1582m) and then on to the summit of Hochplatte (1813m) for lunch before descending by an alternative route via the Feichtenalm to the hotel.

Day 3 Level 3 Ascend to the Barenkopf {1991m}

We take a short bus journey to Pertisau and then the Karwendel cable car to start our walk to Zwolferkops before ascending the Barenkopf (1991m). We descend a short way to the Weißenbachalm (1695m) for a traditional mountain farm lunch before we walk back to Zwolferkopf and take the cable car back.

Level 5 Stanserjoch and Barenkopf summits

We take a short bus journey to Pertisau and then the Karwendel cable car and climb to the summit of the rugged Stanserjoch (2102m) for lunch with its magnificent views of the lake below and the Inn valley. We then descend back down to the Wellfenbachstaffe before ascending the Barenkopf (1991m).  Return is via the Karwendel cable car after a quick drink at the Barenbadalm for a ferry boat ride back to Achenkirch from Pertisau.

Day 4 Level 3 Summit of the Rofanspitze {2258m}

Today we take a short bus journey to Maurach and then the Rofanlift cable car for a memorable ascent of the Rofanspitze (2258m), where we have a picnic lunch with panoramic views. We retrace our steps to the Rofanlift, before catching the steam train and ferry back to Achenkirch.

Level 5 Summit the Rofanspitze {2258m} and Rofan circuit

Today we take a short bus journey to Maurach and then the Rofanlift cable car for a memorable circuit around the Rofan Mountains including climbing to the summit of the Rofanspitze. (2258m), before going off the beaten track descending via a flower filled meadow before a steep climb back to the Rofanlift catching the steam train and ferry back to Achenkirch.

Day 6 Level 3 Walk over the pass at Kogljoch {1487m}

We start with a short bus journey to Steinberg and then walk back to Achenkirch over a remote mountain pass at Kögljoch (1487m).

15 Km; 550m ascent; 600m descent; max altitude 1487m

Level 5 Vorderunnutz {2078m}

After a short bus journey to Steinberg we climb to the summit of the rugged Vorderunnütz (2078m) towering above Achenkirch before descending on a steep path directly to the hotel.

18Km; 1050m ascent; 1170m descent; max altitude 2078m

Day 7 Level 3 Walk the Enzianweg path to Steineres Tor

Today we take the bus to Maurach and then the cable car to the heart of the magnificent Rofan mountain range. Here we start the delightful Enzianweg path which climbs steadily to a col at Steineres Tor (1978m) before descending to the lakeside for a short ferry boat ride back to Achenkirch.

15Km; 300m ascent; 1150m descent; max altitude 1978m

Level 5 Summit Hochiss {2298m}

Today we set off from the hotel along the Eastern side of the lake to Achenseehoff before climbing steeply through the trees and meadows to the heart of the magnificent Rofan mountain range for a second time,  to the imposing summit of Hochiss (2298m), the highest mountain in the range . From here we descend to Maurach via the Rofanlift and the Mauritalm for a drink and Strudel.  Finishing off with a bus ride back to Achenkirch.

Day 8 Transfer to Munich, Fly to London
