The Golden Triangle

Overview

If you’ve never been to India before, the best place to start is in the north, with a journey around the ‘Golden Triangle’ – the cities of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.

In majestic, colonial New Delhi, wide boulevards and refined buildings hark back to the days of British rule, whilst in stark contrast Old Delhi is renowned for its bustling streets and lively markets. Here you can admire the impressive Red Fort and mighty Jama Masjid – said to be the largest mosque in India.

Around 200km south of Delhi lies the city of Agra and from here you’ll visit India’s most famous attraction, the Taj Mahal. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, this glorious white-marble monument shimmers in the sunlight and is considered by many to be the most beautiful building in the world. As spectacular as it is, the Taj Mahal is not the only highlight of a visit to Agra, and during your time here you’ll also want to take in the magnificent red-sandstone Agra Fort.

Then it’s on to the ‘pink city’ of Jaipur, where the buildings within the historic walled centre are all painted a shade of pink. Here, highlights include the magnificent City Palace and pyramid shaped ‘Palace of the Winds’. Not to be missed, Amber Fort is also nearby. It’s a red-sandstone and marble fortress, one of the most famous in Rajasthan.
