Overview

Every winter off the coast of Norway, a great number of orcas and humpback whales gather to feast on rich feeding grounds. We’ll have the chance to find out about some unique Whale Research combined with one of the most incredible displays nature has to offer with an opportunity to swim with these gentle giants of the sea.

We’re also in one of the best places in the world to see the mystical Northern Lights – so join us on this journey as we enjoy all mother nature has to offer!

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Tromso

Check into our quality hotel and unwind in the beautiful surroundings of Tromsø city. We’ll meet up for a fabulous welcome dinner this evening at Emma’s.

Day 2: Fjord sightseeing

After breakfast today we’ll travel by bus from Tromso to Sommarøy. No trip to Norway is complete without a fjord sightseeing excursion so this afternoon bring your best camera and prepare yourself for a sightseeing delight as we explore the spectacular Norwegian fjords and charismatic wildlife. 

Listen to screeching gulls and the hypnotic sound of the surf as you focus your lens up-close on views of some of nature’s most charismatic wildlife, including seals, eagles, and of course, whales.

Day 3: Whale research safari and chasing the northern lights

Every winter off the coast of Norway, a great number of orcas and humpback whales gather to feast on rich feeding grounds. This unique Whale Research Safari combines one of the most incredible displays nature has to offer with a captivating, in-depth research experience. A marine mammal scientist will introduce you to the whales of Norway and the research program through an engaging presentation.

At sea, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in the research and become a marine biologist for the day; Become an explorer; track whales, take photos and videos, while listening to the captivating songs of the wild. This evening, weather permitting*, we will chase the Northern Lights, heading inland to the area we’re most likely to see the lights this night based on the prevailing solar activity. Dress up warmly!

Day 4: Swimming with whales or top view whale watching

Today we will go whale watching and for the true adventurous traveller, we offer the ultimate experience - Let yourself be dazzled by an endless sea of herring as you enter the realm of the killer whales.

You can go snorkeling in one of the world’s largest fishing grounds filled with many, many whales. An experience like no other…Being in the water close to the whales is an unique experience. Their size will astound you, and their beauty is beyond words. Swimming with the whales is a memory you are likely to treasure for a lifetime.

Day 5: Explore Tromso. 

Today we’ll return to Tromso and have an afternoon to explore the city. Armed with your access pass to the major attractions in Tromso you’ll have access to all the major attractions in Tromso.

You might want to visit the Polaria Aquarium, Polstjerna vessel, Polar Museum, Tromso museum or the Arctic Cathedral, or take the cable car up the mountain for a breath-taking view whilst enjoying some cake and hot chocolate…the choice is yours today. 24hrs of unlimited public transport included in your city pass.

We’ll meet up again in the evening when we’ll let the reindeer carry us through the night, as we go in search again of the spectacular Northern lights.

Then, let the indigenous people of Norway, the Samis, invite you into their homes. Warm up around the fire for storytelling, traditional chanting, called joik, and enjoy a home cooked traditional Sami meal. The Sami will share with you their story – how they learned to survive the Arctic winters, and formed close bonds with the animals that are an integral part of their daily lives, even today.

Day 6: Dog sledding across the Norwegian wilderness

Today we’ll experience winter dog sledding across the Norwegian wilderness with a pack of friendly Huskies. They will get you close to nature at surprisingly thrilling speeds. The dogsledding with Alaskan Huskies will take us to Kvaløya, one of Norway’s largest islands. There are great views of the mountains surrounding Tromsø and towards the Balsfjord and Malangen peninsula.

You also get to meet up to 300 four legged friends up close and spend some time with the puppies. After a ride in the Norwegian winter a hearty meal of Bidos, prepared with reindeer meat, broth and vegetables is just what the body needs. We serve the meal in our camp around the fire (vegetarian meal available on request). We’ll head back to Tromso late in the afternoon in time for our farewell dinner.

Day 7: Departure day from Tromso

Enjoy the comfort of the hotel before checking-out and transferring to the airport for departure flights from Tromsø airport.
